Good Things-- March 7

I have been reading the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver about her journey in eating and farming local foods. It is very inspiring and a fun read. I try to get in a little bit every day. It is amazing how many foods we eat out of season just because our recipes call for them. It has encouraged me to do a little more research and find places in the area to buy local foods. I can't wait for Farmer's Markets starting soon!

Hi Jamie,

I'm reading this book also. Albeit, very s-l-o-w-l-y...there is a lot to take in! Josh and I just watched Food, Inc for the first time the other day also. Both the film and the book are challenging me to rethink how we buy and eat food. A few things we're moving towards - buying locally, organically, and foods in season. A tough commitment, but one that I believe is more friendly to my body, farmers, animals, and the environment.

Lindsay--yeah, it can be VERY overwhelming. I am trying to take one step at a time, researching different options. I tend to want to jump in, then get overwhelmed and quit. For now, Bob and I are tracking our spending of fruits and vegetables at the market so we can compare what it would be like to put that money toward a co-op or CSA. We are so used to eating whatever we want when we want it that it is hard to eat in season. As in, tomatoes are not in season now but I want some on my pizza tonight! I am also just attempting to make more things from scratch and to not buy foods that have ingredients in them that I don't recognize/couldn't reproduce at home. Thanks for your thoughts!
